Families, Autumn 2011
‘Families’ is a new collection of illustrated work with a
simple central theme. The work explores notions of family
ties between characters and the kinship of blood relatives.
Each family of Russian dolls is unique and illustrated with
characters based on antique photographs and postcards
from the artist’s own collection. The wooden dolls have
been crafted in Russia and hand-painted by the artist.
The 8 illustrations show different family relationships and
have all been drawn exclusively for this exhibition. The
screen prints have been produced in a limited run of 20 and
are hand-pulled on 300 gsm Somerset cotton paper then
stamped, numbered and signed by the artist.
‘Families’ is Joe Hardy’s first solo exhibition and the first
time his work has been displayed in Japan.
